In early December, Image Tours staff had a special opportunity to participate together on the CHRISTMAS MARKETS OF GERMANY & AUSTRIA tour. From the very beginning, the trip was filled with adventure and magical moments…stunning alpine scenery; the aroma of holiday treats; Christmas markets lit up at night; and sharing laughter with fellow travelers made it an unforgettable time.

The Christmas markets boasted stall after stall of traditional gingerbread, roasted nuts, pastries, and sausages. And of course, there were a plethora of handcrafted gifts and classic holiday decorations. Nutcrackers were purchased – because leaving without one was unthinkable – while listening to a local choir sing carols. Surrounded by festive stalls and spectacular mountains while browsing the markets was an experience full of holiday cheer.

While browsing the Christmas Markets was a central highlight, everyone quickly realized there was so much more to experience than just shopping. Nights were spent in cozy hotels where everyone always felt welcome to gather and talk about the day’s adventures. When not together in the common areas, travelers admired the view from balconies overlooking the mountains. Waking up to snow-capped peaks and beautiful landscapes set the tone for each day’s activities.

Local entertainment including yodeling and traditional music were provided during a couple evenings. The two-man Rascals band played traditional instruments and festive music after dinner at our hotel in Filzmoos, Austria. Dressed in lederhosen, they encouraged lots of humorous audience participation. Yet nothing could outshine the yodeling of the Gundolf Family. For days fellow travelers were trying to imitate their “iiiieee!!” with little success.

Everyone made it a point to try as many local dishes as possible. A few of the local beverages found on the tour were Glühwein, orange punch, the best hot chocolate, and a Christmas Market favorite called “Feuerzangen Bowle”—a warm drink made by pouring rum over a large chunk of sugar and lighting it on fire. Culinary dishes sampled included Spätzle, Schnitzel, and, of course, a pretzel—each one inspired an easy "yes" when offered. Every beverage provided the opportunity to bring home a mug from that specific market. I believe we ended up with about two dozen mugs, each with a unique design and story to tell.

One of the most memorable moments was learning about the local traditions surrounding St. Nicholas Day, celebrated on December 6th. Originally meant to reward good children, this day later merged with the Christmas holiday, adding richness to the festive season. Discovering the history of Krampus (the mythical counter-part to St. Nicholas who punishes those who are naughty) was equally fascinating and offered a unique glimpse into local folklore.

What stood out most throughout the trip was the knowledge shared by the tour staff and the local hospitality. Everywhere travelers were greeted with kindness and warmth. The Christmas Markets tour was a wonderful blend of adventure, relaxation, and connection. The tour is being offered again in 2025 on December 4th.
